Myths and Facts About Reliable Backup

Jan 14, 2026 | 0 comments

Do we have a reliable backup, and what is the best way to protect critical information?

It’s hard to find anyone today who doesn’t use digital information stored on a laptop, computer, phone, or online. Our daily lives are filled with work data, photos of our loved ones, interesting articles, books, and so much more.

Unfortunately, most of us have experienced the inconvenience of losingimportant information —due to a failed hard drive, a stolen device, ransomware, or even a hacker attack.

There are many misconceptions that are widely accepted as truth, but in reality, the rules for avoiding data storage pitfalls are quite simple:

Myth #1 - It’s enough to copy my data to another medium — a hard drive, a USB flash drive, or a second device.

Myth #4 – I have cloud storage / online space where I keep my backups.

 Fact:

That’s great, but you should be aware that there may be delays in restoring your information, as all data must be downloaded from the Internet to your device. Some major cloud storage providers offer very low-cost data storage services that, however, require several days to restore your data (Amazon S3 Glacier).

With so many potential points of failure, how can we protect important information? In fact, it’s not that difficult if the following principles are followed:

  • Бекъпите се правят регулярно и автоматично.
  • Backups are stored in a different location from the original data.
  • Backups are encrypted, which protects them from unauthorized access.
  • Backups are tested regularly to ensure successful recovery.

ENISA (European Network and Information Security Agency) — the EU organization responsible for information security across all its member states — recommends the use of the so-called the 3-2-1 rule. What does this mean?

3 – keep three copies of the data. One is the original, the second is a backup, and the third is a backup of the backup.

2 – keep these copies on two different types of media — for example, on a hard drive and in the cloud.

1 – have at least one copy stored away from the location of the original — at a remote company site, in the cloud, or, for larger organizations, in a secure vault.

As a partner of two of the world’s leading companies — Veeam and Acronis – BGServiz always recommends that its clients follow the above rule when using backups.
